Tom @ LOPSA-NJ, Thu Jan 5, 2012, Lawrenceville, NJ (near Princeton)

I'll be speaking at LOPSA-New Jersey on Thursday. This will be a repeat of the keynote I did in North Carolina last November. While it says "security" in the title, it will make sense whether you work in security or not. All are invited! (no charge to attend)

Topic: You Suck At Time Management (but it isn't your fault!) Date: Thursday, January 5 2012 Time: 7:00pm (social), 7:30pm (presentation)

Pizza and Soda being brought to you by: INetU Managed Hosting

If you are planing on coming please RSVP so we have a good count for the Pizza.

Location: Lawrence Headquarters Branch of the Mercer County Library
2751 US Highway 1
Lawrenceville, 08648-4132

So much to do! So little time! Security people are pulled in so many directions it is impressive anything gets done at all. The bad news is that if you work in security then good time management is basically impossible. The good news is that it isn't your fault. Tom will explore many of the causes and will offer solutions based from his book, "Time Management for System Administrators" (Now translated into 5 languages.)

Tom @ LOPSA-NYC, 7pm, June 14, 2011 speaking about The Ganeti Project

I'll be speaking at LOPSA-NYC Tuesday, June 14, 7pm. Please pre-register to speed your way through security.

Come here me speak about the Ganeti open source project. Think virtualization clusters have to cost big bucks? Think virtualization isn't useful for a small site? Come and find out why a person that usually talks about Time Management thinks virtualization is his new favorite time management trick.

Here is the official announcement.

  • Topic: Ganeti: Open source virtualization (like VMWare ESX + VMotion but open source)
  • Speaker: Tom Limoncelli, Google, Inc
  • When: Tuesday, June 14, 7pm - 9:30pm

  • Description: Ganeti is a cluster virtual server management software tool built on top of existing virtualization technologies such as Xen or KVM and other Open Source software. Ganeti takes care of disk creation, migration, OS installation, shutdown, startup, and can be used to preemptively move a virtual machine off a physical machine that is starting to get sick. It doesn't require a big expensive SAN, complicated networking, or a lot of money. The project is used around the world by many organizations; it is sponsored by Google and hosted at http://code.google.com/p/ganeti

  • Registration: http://lopsanyc.eventbrite.com/

Please make sure to register on the page to avoid any issues with DE Shaw security and entering the building.

Tom @ BayLISA, Thu, Jan 21, Mountain View, CA

Tom will be speaking about the Ganeti open-source project (manages virtual server clusters). More info at www.baylisa.org.

Two talks in one:

Talk 1: Tom Limoncelli's Top 5 Tips: Time Management for System Administrators: Based on his O'Reilly book, Tom will present his top 5 tips for system administrators. Tom will also have copies of the new 2nd edition of The Practice of System and Network Administration.

Talk 2: Ganeti: Open Source Virtual Cluster Manager: Why should virtualization clusters be difficult to manage? Why do they require expensive SANs and management software? Ganeti is a management layer that sits on top of the virtualization stack of your choosing: Virtualization using Xen, KVM or Containers plus storage using DRBD, flat files, or SANs. Ganeti is open source, written in Python, and is under active development. The largest known Ganeti cluster is 40 physical machines with 240 virtual machines. It supports virtual Linux and Windows instances. The management layer lets you create, manage, and migrate virtual machines with very simple commands. Live migration is supported. Removing the requirement of an expensive SAN permits users to do things such as install one tiny cluster in each of 100 offices around the world, or setting up dozens of large clusters in a major data center. The open source homepage is here: http://code.google.com/p/ganeti/

Tom @ LISA '09, Nov 1-6, 2009, Baltimore, MD

Tom will be very busy at LISA 2009 both teaching and hosting various events:
  • Half-day Tutorial: "Time Management for System Administrators: A New Approach"
  • Half-day Tutorial: "Design Patterns for System Administrators"
  • Guru Session: Job Hunting (with Andy Lester from http://theworkinggeek.com, author of the new book Land The Tech Job You Love
  • BoFs: I'll be hosting 3 BoFs. A 2-hour BoF on "Time Management", a BoF for the open-source project called Ganeti. And I'll be MC of this year's LGBT and Allies BoF.
  • I'll be at the Google Vendor BoF on Thursday night to answer questions about what it is like to work at Google.
  • Book signing: I hope to arrange a Book Signing during the vendor show.
With all that happening, I've also set a goal for myself to read all the papers before the conference. I promise myself that I'll do this every year, but this time I'm actually setting aside time to do the reading. Let's see how that goes. LISA is rarely in the Washington D.C. area. This gives locals an opportunity to attend LISA without having to pay for travel (I'll be taking Amtrak!). Hopefully this means there will be a lot of new faces. Hope to see you there! Registration is open.

Interview with Tom Limoncelli in ComputerWorld

I'll be the the keynote at Linux.Conf.Au in 2 weeks so ComputerWorld rang me up for an interview. They asked me about what I'd be speaking about, the challenges of system administration, and my political activism.
Interview with Tom Limoncelli in ComputerWorld: The sysadmin's mantra: Manage time, think 'abundance' and softly does it. Author and system administrator guru Tom Limoncelli offers his insights into a range of sysadmin topics ahead of his keynote speech this month at linux.conf.au.
Just between me and the readers of this blog, during the interview I had a disquieting realization that the interviewer came from a perspective that open source wasn't the obvious default for everything. Oh yeah, we open source users are still, ya know, cutting edge! What a reality check that was! (Think about that the next time you apt-get!)

With the economy in a down-turn, Time Management is key to being efficient at what you do. With people's hiring budgets being slashed, it is important that the people you do hire are top notch. Both of these tutorials are intended for both the new and experienced system administrator or IT manager.

The sixth annual Ohio LinuxFest will be held on October 10-11, 2008 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Hosting authoritative speakers and a large expo, the Ohio LinuxFest welcomes Free and Open Source Software professionals, enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to take part in the event. NC*SA: Mon, Sept 13, 2004

Tom will be speaking at NC*SA at the Red Hat Corporate HQ, 1801 Varsity Dr, Raleigh, NC on Monday, Sept 13 at 7:00pm:

"Where the hell is my flying car?"
It's 2004 and we still don't have moving side-walks or flying cars, and computers aren't nearly as cool as they were on The Jetsons. Tom has visited many sites in the last few years and observed a lot of really bad IT practices. He will discuss what he saw and some recent epiphanies he's had about "best practices" in system administration. The second half of the talk will be about his current project to update a small company's IT infrastructure. It has forced him to rethink what constitutes the "basic infrastructure" of an IT organization, and how big companies are held back when they forget the basics.
He's also working on a new book about time management for sysadmins, and will be treating us to some excerpts!
The presentation is free and open to the public.

Usenix2004: June 28, Boston

We're proud to announce that Tom will be speaking at a panel called "System Administration: The Big Picture" at Usenix 2004.

Session: System Administration: The Big Picture

The Human Big Picture
Tom Limoncelli

Imagine rolling out a security patch, a new application, or a new operating system to 40,000 PCsit's 70% communication, 25% technical work, and 10% ego management. System administration on a large scale becomes a study of human relationships: managing large teams of people on a project, managing expectations and resources with upper management, and coordinating with a user base. Psychology and public relations become just as important as technical prowess. Why aren't those skills taught to CS majors?
